Walsall Belt
Walsall, England, has been the heart of British saddlery for a couple of centuries. At its peak, the town was full of bridle cutters, harness makers and buckle smiths. J. & E. Sedgwick started there in 1900, dressing leather for bridles and reins — gear that absolutely could not stretch, crack or fail.
That's the leather this belt is cut from. Sedgwick's curriers work wax into the grain by hand, which gives it a dense, polished feel and a trick most leather can't do: bloom. When it's fresh or the air turns cold, a white haze of wax can rise to the surface. That's not a flaw — it's how you know it's the real thing. Rub it with a soft cloth and the wax goes right back in, or leave it and let it settle in on its own.
It starts firm. Give it a few weeks and it shapes itself to you, then spends the next few decades picking up a burnished sheen that's all yours.
